Good evening, Bulldog fans,
As we think about last week’s game and prepare for our matchup against Mercer, I want to share some thoughts on our team’s status and our goals for the future.
Our offense didn’t start strong, which put us behind early. We struggled to win first and second downs consistently, resulting in five “three and outs” and 30 missed assignments that we need to address. On defense, we one too many big plays, and our special teams didn’t take advantage of their opportunities. We need to improve in these areas. Despite the setbacks, there were moments of positivity. Late in the game, our offense executed a 99-yard 2-minute drive, which was encouraging. Defensively, we rank fifth in the nation for sacks and limited our opponents to 4 of 13 on third downs. This shows promise, even though the overall results weren’t what we wanted.
As a team and coaching staff, we understand where we need to work and are eager to tackle it. One thing we’re doing well is minimizing penalties; we’re ranked first nationally, which shows our discipline. Our defensive performance in the red zone is good, but we always strive to improve. On offense, finding success in the red zone starts with winning early downs. We need to win first and second downs to set ourselves up for successful third downs, and that’s our focus tomorrow.
Our defensive line is a strength with nine sacks in three games, ranking fifth nationally. Having already played two playoff teams, we recognize what playoff-caliber football looks like, it includes the mindset and execution we must have.
Everything we want is still ahead of us. Conference play begins fresh this week against Mercer. It’s an important game, but just the next game; we don’t elevate opponents based on their rank. Mercer uses a two-QB system, and we’re well-prepared for both quarterbacks.
To go 2-0 in the conference, we need to start fast, control the middle eight minutes, and finish strong. Ball security is vital; we can’t afford any turnovers this week. Defensively, we need to create takeaways to give our offense more chances. We aren’t satisfied with our special teams yet; we haven’t made enough game-changing plays.
We’re focused, determined, and ready to compete.
Go Dogs!
Sincerely,
Maurice T. Drayton ’98
